[The familiar sizzle of bacon drags him out of his slumber. Kaeya lays in bed for a moment, then reaches for a pair of pants laid out the night before. It's as presentable as he plans to be. Diluc hasn't complained (he stared the first time). He fits his eyepatch on and walks barefoot from the hall into the living room.
He stretches his arms over his head, then walks into the kitchen was a lazy greeting. He slips into a chair at the breakfast bar and finally uses his hair brush to get out the tangles in his hair from last night.]
[It's become a comforting sort of routine, since they first moved into this strange cozy little house. Diluc has learned that breakfast is by far the best way to draw Kaeya out of bed at a decent hour, and he's mostly gotten used to the fact that the other man feels that mealtime does not necessarily warrant wearing a shirt.
Diluc is dressed casually himself, hair pulled high in a ponytail, clad in only his pants and a short-sleeved shirt.]
Good morning. [Diluc offers, finishing up with the bacon. Kaeya is right on time. Bacon, freshly warmed bread (bought from the bakery, but warmed in the oven) and jam, eggs, fruit. He plates the eggs and meat for each of them, setting one before Kaeya and one at his own usual seat. The bread, butter and jam are already on the breakfast bar. He turns off the stove, sets the pan into the sink to wash with the rest of the dishes once they're done, and brings a still-steeping pot of tea over to the trivet waiting for it.]
[While Diluc shuts off the stove. Kaeya cuts the bread. He doctors the slices according to their individual tastes. He sets Diluc’s on his plate and takes a bite out of his own.
It’s as good as last time they got bread from the bakery. His tail wags behind him and thumps against the back of his chair. He doesn’t mind showing Diluc he enjoys the food. The bacon is quickly devoured. Since this change he needs more meat than he used to.]
[Diluc takes his seat and starts in on his breakfast as well. It's nice, really, starting mornings with Kaeya like this -- quiet, unhurried. Domestic even. It's reminiscent of days so far gone by they sometimes feel like they happened to someone else.]
What do you have planned today?
[Casual conversation, still not entirely his strong suit, but he is getting better at it.]
[ sophie had spoken to diluc and they'd found a mutually available time to meet on the practice grounds. it was an interesting place, she had to admit, with its mix of militaristic and free rein. the sparring pits were mostly empty, and she'd chosen one that was away from the others. the ground was sand, firm enough as a foothold but easy to clean and re-rake smooth. the walls would keep any stray weapons or magic from flying wild.
she'd come early, to get a feel for the place and prepare herself. it's been a long time since she'd done any fighting that wasn't intended to harm, and this would be something of a test of her own restraint as much as an opportunity to practice. she's dressed appropriately for the occasion, having finally managed to brave the clothing shops enough to obtain a few simple outfits. the one she's chosen today is a close-fitting top paired with pants that are loose enough not to hamper movement but also not so billowing as to potentially snag. her hair is loosely braided and coiled above the nape of her neck to keep it out of the way.
satisfied that she's adequately prepared, she hops up onto the side of the wall, making it easy for diluc to spot her. ]
[Diluc arrives shortly before their agreed upon time, punctual as ever. His bright red hair is secured in a ponytail as usual. He's branched out just slightly from his usual attire since he's gotten comfortable here, but there is still a sense of formality to his attire, though it affords him the movement that he'll need for sparring.
He catches sight of Sophie and raises a hand to wave in greeting, angling his steps over towards her. He looks unarmed for the moment, though the crystal at his hip is still present.]
You've found a good spot. We should be able to spar freely here.
[ she hops down from the wall into the sparring pit itself, landing lightly. she's small, but it's clear from the way she lands and then the way she walks toward the far wall, poised but relaxed, that this is indeed someone who knows very well how to control her body. ]
Did you have anything in particular in mind for today? I can likely match you in whatever you prefer. Or we can start by taking measure of each other.
[She's quite small, but Diluc has seen enough battles that he knows better than to underestimate anyone for their size. There's something in her posture, the way she holds herself that reads to him like a warrior.]
Let's take each other's measure, shall we? Shall we start with hand to hand or weapons?
[His best is swords, but he'll work with anything.]
[He wakes when someone moves next to him. Kaeya opens his eyes. Diluc is laying beside him with an arm over his waist. He turns to face him. Bright red hair seems to be made of flame in the early morning light.
He winds a lock of hair around his fingers and smiles. Last night floods back to him. He lays back down, tucking himself into the offered space.
Diluc’s scent fills his nose. A light giddy bubble of joy wells up within him. He starts to close his eyes again, half watching Diluc sleep.] A perfect morning.
[Diluc only stirs when Kaeya turns in his arms. He's not used to waking with anyone in his bed, but the initial surprise is soothed by the memory of settling in with Kaeya the night before.
He waits until Kaeya has tucked himself back in before he opens his eyes, barely a slit of red visible beneath lowered lashes. Kaeya is warm in his arms, and as the other man speaks, he tightens that arm around him.]
It is, isn't it? [He smiles, still a bit sleepy.] Did you sleep well?
[He can tell by the light pouring in the window that it's later than he normally rises, and he wonders at himself for that. But he has no desire to leave this bed right now, too comfortable to even consider it.]
[Diluc gives into that impulse and lets his fingers run up Kaeya's back slowly. He meets that kiss with a soft, pleased little hum. This is... the nicest way he has every woken up in his life.]
No, not at all.
[His arm tightens around Kaeya as if even thinking about him moving is extremely objectionable. One day spent lingering in bed won't harm anything.] Let's stay?
[He's going to steal another kiss, because he can.]
[He has gotten used to going to bed with Diluc. It has become a routine and the worries about how long this would be allowed have faded. Some part of him still worries this is all a dream and he would wake up in his flat all alone.
The sun rises. He clings to Diluc as he rises. He doesn’t pull on him to come back to bed. Kaeya acts like a cat that refuses to move as they shuffle across the room to the bathroom. He mumbles a reply to a question while trying to keep dozing.
He’s being a brat. The attitude works until he hears a rustle and the thump of fabric hitting the floor. His eyes snap open. The question surfaces and he opens his mouth then closes it.
He lets go of Diluc and pulls his long shirt up and over his head on automatic. Too late to retreat and he doesn’t want to disappoint his soul mate. His face feels hot. He ignores it.]
[Diluc is getting used to Kaeya's mood in the morning. And while it's terribly endearing and he's thoroughly charmed by it, he also needs to tear himself out of bed, and this time Kaeya comes with him, so he figures they may as well make the most of it.
So he asks him to come to the shower with him if he feels the need to be clingy. He's half asleep himself, and the question makes sense really.
He's already out of his pajamas and reaching to set the shower running to let it warm up before he looks back to Kaeya.]
[His long shirt falls from his fingers as he stares at the naked back of one Diluc Ragnvindr. He expected scars. But Diluc is a work of art he can’t tear his eyes away from.
He coughs and turns away. He pulls his boxers off while his embarrassment floods his mind. At least he’s wide awake now. Damn he wants to run his hands over Diluc’s back…
He kicks that part of him to silence and looks back over his shoulder.] Of course I won’t wear a shirt into the shower. I’m just slower in the morning, you know that by now.
[He sets his pajamas aside neatly. He turns back to glance at Kaeya, catching him just as he rids himself of his boxers. It's a lovely view from this side of the room too., and he lets his eyes wander.
Is he imagining that blush that's visible as Kaeya glances back at him.]
Yes, yes. You're not a morning person. I'm a little afraid that's rubbing off on me.
[He's never lingered in bed half so long as he does now that Kaeya is sharing it with him. Moving closer he sets a hand lightly against Kaeya's back, leaning in to press a kiss to his shoulder.]
[When it is the day of gift giving for Mondstadt. A package sits in the kitchen. It is wrapped beautifully and precisely in plain paper. Inside is a tempered glass teapot with tins and containers of fruit teas. A little moisture-proof contained contains blooming teas. A jar of dark honey is nestled in the center.
A letter written in an elegant hand lies beside the package.]
D, I'm outside cutting the firewood. I hope this gift brings you some joy. In winter we can't get the fruit juice you love so much. This is as close to it as I could get. I even got some of the honey you love at the market. It took some doing!
Please do ravish me in your appreciation. I have a more private gift to give you that's as much a gift to me as it is to you. ;) - Your future husband, K.
[On the morning of Winter's Crest, Kaeya and Diluc will find a basket in front of the door to their home. Inside is an apple cake, a bottle of apple wine and bear-shaped ginger cookies. There's a note in Vex's handwriting.]
Kaeya and Diluc,
I wavered over what to give the two of you for Winter's Crest. This holiday on Exandria is about celebrating victory over evil and enjoying the love and warmth of family and friends with food, games, and lots of fun. So, I decided to make you these treats and to make sure that you come to the Keep for tonight's festivities.
[At midnight, the wind swirling around the still form of Kaeya Alberich fades to nothing. His fur is windswept, and the patterns of stars extend and stretch into patterns of whorls of wind.
He wakes up slowly, a golden left eye sliding open before his right eye opens. He lays there for a moment with a furrow on his brow. He lifts his hands and stops, staring at the ring that catches the light. Memories start to flood back as he kisses the ring and cradles his hand. He drops it onto his chest and looks around.] Diluc?
[His voice sounds raspy as if from disuse. He frowns at that. This certainly hasn't been his finest hour.] Luc?
[Diluc has not been dealing with Kaeya's state well. Of course, the way the redhead deals with stress is to internalize it all and go very, very quiet, downright monosyllabic.
He's spent most of his time keeping vigil, and Kaeya will notice that he's been carefully tucked into their bed. There's a vase of fresh flowers on the bedside table, the soft scent of lavender permeating the room.
At the sound of his name, Diluc is sprinting to the bedroom, nearly skidding to a stop in the doorway as he sees Kaeya awake. The Ragnvindr heir looks less put together than usual. His hair is drawn up into a high, messy ponytail, and he's wearing nothing fancier than a pair of pants and a dark t-shirt. There are dark circles under his eyes, but the relief on his face is obvious.]
Kae. You're awake. Thank the gods. [He closes the rest of the distance between them, reaching out to brush back the other man's hair, careful, delicate.] Are you all right?
[His eyes widen. Diluc looks like he has been through hell. It is so at odds with his last memories that he sits up and reaches for him.
He wraps his arms around him. Kaeya leans into the warmth of his body. It feels familiar and new at the same time.] I’m alright. You look like you need some sleep.
[He has no idea of the change to his eye or his fur. He slides his arms up Diluc’s back as he studies his face.] How long was I…scaring you.
For once he could feel it at the core of his being. Diluc had been snatched up. He had followed on foot then on the wing. But try as he might he couldn’t make enough headway to catch up. He had sank to his knees in the snow and let himself have a moment to feel all of the rage inside his heart.
Then the massive dragon had come back and snatched him up. He hadn’t opposed him. If he could get to Diluc then they could work together to get away.
Everything changed when the dragon dove down into the wells and glided into a sparkling cave. Soft music floated up from the piles of pillows and comfortable blankets. His eye widened as rows of books came into view. They were stacked neatly on shelves next to scroll cases. Crystals dangled from cords hanging from the ceiling.
The warmth of the torches washed over him as he caught sight of fiery red hair. The cave had what looked like reading nooks. As he was gently set down he kept his gazed fixed on one of them. Diluc sat tucked among pillows and blankets as he thumbed through a book.
He permitted himself a look. The cover had a pirate in the front with a white frilly shirt that is open far enough to show off his tan skin and well toned chest. The smirk on his face and the eyepatch…
He darted through the pillows and forded over blankets to plaster himself to Diluc’s side. He reached for Diluc’s face to turn his head and kiss him as if it had been years instead of hours of separation. He could tease him about the book in a minute.]
[Admittedly being swept up and carried off by a dragon is far from ideal. Diluc is clearly not a fan, and his arms are caught up in a way that keeps him from his weapon and doing anything useful with his Vision. It's not a good situation, and he hears Kaeya cry out for him, had seen the swiftly dwindling form of the other man as the dragon currently holding him fled off on large, powerful wings.
The landing and everything that followed had been, well, a surprise. Tumbling and rolling to his feet, Diluc had his sword out and was ready to fight when the dragon -- apparently name Kevin, of all things -- assured him that there was no need for that. It would be much better if he simply made himself comfortable. There were certainly places to do so, several nooks strewn with pillows and thick blankets, in between more traditional piles of gold and other glittery objects. And books. Lots of books.
What had started as an uneasy conversation rather quickly became almost spirited. And when Diluc tried to explain that Kaeya would be concerned, and that he'd rather not be separated from his lover so abruptly, Kevin seemed aghast that he'd separated them and made assurances that he'd bring Kaeya here.
That hadn't been exactly what Diluc had been going for, but it would work well enough, so he didn't protest as the dragon flew off.
Instead he settled himself down to read -- a frankly fascinating and in no way particularly chosen, of course -- book, until the flapping of leathery wings announced Kevin's return. Then Kaeya was tucked against his side, and Diluc set the book aside to turn into him, to return that kiss and wrap the other man in his arms to urge him closer. He could feel the concern and worry in the kiss, deliberately sending a rush of assurance through their bond. I'm all right. I'm here. We both are safe. Eventually he drew back.]
[Kaeya visibly looks Diluc over for injuries. He looks fine. He brushes red hair out of Diluc’s eyes.] Of course I was worried. I know you can handle yourself but it happened so fast!
[Fast like when the wyvern attacked all those years ago on the night that changed them both forever. His ears perk up at the sounds of the dragon moving about then refocus back on Diluc.]
[Diluc will find he's gotten a gift basket. Inside the gift basket are several non-alcholic drinks Aether's learned from Diluc. There's one Tart brilliance, Barbatos' Boon, one Stroke of Night, and two Moonlit Alleys. There's a set of grape plushies and a card. The card contains the follow message:
Dear Master Diluc,
Wherever we are or end up being, I'm glad to have met you and be you friend. I hope you have a great birthday and you have many more happy memories wherever you are.
